NSW $15,000 Energy Rebate 2026:
What Homeowners Need to Know

NSW households can now access up to $15,000 in zero-interest finance for eligible home energy upgrades under the NSW Government’s Home Energy Saver program.

Although the program is frequently described online as the “NSW $15,000 energy rebate”, it is important to understand that the $15,000 assistance is not a cash rebate or grant. It is a zero-interest loan that eligible households can repay over a period of up to 10 years.

A separate discount of up to $4,000 is also planned for eligible lower-income households and concession card holders.

Here is what NSW homeowners need to know about the program in 2026.

What Is the NSW Home Energy Saver Program?

The Home Energy Saver program is a $557 million NSW Government initiative designed to make energy-efficient home improvements more affordable.

Eligible homeowners and landlords may apply for a zero-interest loan of up to $15,000. The loan can be used for approved upgrades that may reduce household energy consumption, lower electricity bills and improve year-round comfort.

According to the NSW Government, loan applications are currently open and there is no announced closing date.

Is the NSW $15,000 Offer a Rebate?

No. The maximum $15,000 available through the program is a zero-interest loan, not a cash rebate.

Successful applicants must repay the amount borrowed, but no interest is charged. Repayments can be spread over a period of up to 10 years, subject to approval and the applicable loan terms.

The program also includes a separate discount of up to $4,000. As of 16 July 2026, applications for this discount have not yet opened.

Homeowners who may qualify for both forms of assistance should carefully consider the order in which they apply. The NSW Government currently recommends applying for the discount first if both the discount and loan will be used for the same purchase.

What Can the $15,000 Zero-Interest Loan Cover?

The Home Energy Saver loan can be used for a range of eligible energy-saving products and improvements, including:

  • Rooftop solar systems

  • Residential battery storage

  • Switchboard upgrades

  • Heat pump hot water systems

  • Solar water heaters

  • Reverse-cycle air conditioning

  • Induction cooktops

  • Level 2 home EV chargers

  • DC ceiling fans

  • Ceiling insulation

  • Draught-proofing

  • Double-glazed windows

  • NatHERS home energy assessments

This means eligible households may be able to finance a complete solar and battery system or combine several smaller energy-efficiency improvements within the approved loan amount.

Products, suppliers and installations must meet the program’s requirements. Applicants should review the official guidelines before signing a sales contract.

Who Is Eligible for the NSW $15,000 Energy Loan?

To meet the main eligibility requirements for the zero-interest loan, an applicant must:

  • Own the property being upgraded

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident

  • Have a combined annual taxable household income of no more than $210,000

  • Meet the participating finance provider’s lending and verification requirements

  • Use eligible products and approved suppliers

Landlords may also apply if they meet the relevant eligibility requirements.

Applicants will generally need to provide evidence of household income. The finance provider may request the owners’ Notices of Assessment from the most recently completed financial year.

Meeting the program’s basic eligibility criteria does not guarantee finance approval. Applications are assessed by the participating finance provider.

What Is the Additional $4,000 Discount?

The NSW Home Energy Saver program also provides for a discount of up to $4,000 for eligible households.

To qualify, an applicant must generally be a homeowner or tenant named on the lease and meet at least one of the following conditions:

  • Have a combined annual household income of no more than $80,000

  • Hold a Health Care Card

  • Hold a Low Income Health Care Card

  • Hold a Pensioner Concession Card

  • Hold a Veteran Gold Card

Eligible renters may apply for the discount, but they must obtain their landlord’s permission before making changes to the property. Strata approval may also be required where applicable.

Discount recipients must make a minimum contribution of at least $200 towards their upgrade.

Applications for the discount are expected to open later in 2026. Check the official Home Energy Saver website for current availability before making a purchase.

Can the Loan Be Combined With Other Solar and Battery Incentives?

Depending on the product and eligibility rules, households may be able to combine the Home Energy Saver loan with other available incentives.

For example, the Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides an upfront discount of around 30% on eligible battery systems connected to new or existing solar.

The federal battery discount is normally arranged through an eligible retailer or accredited installer. The remaining cost may potentially be financed through the NSW Home Energy Saver loan, subject to program rules and finance approval.

Customers should ask for an itemised quote showing:

  • The original system price

  • Every government discount or certificate included

  • The final amount payable

  • The amount being financed

  • Loan repayments and term

  • Product and installation warranties

Do not assume that every advertised solar or battery system automatically qualifies.

How to Apply for the NSW Home Energy Saver Loan

The NSW Government recommends the following process:

  1. Check the official eligibility requirements.

  2. Decide which eligible energy upgrades are suitable for your home.

  3. Select a participating finance provider.

  4. Obtain quotes from suppliers approved by that finance provider.

  5. Complete the loan application through the finance provider’s website.

Home Energy Saver loans are currently delivered through Brighte and Plenti. These providers assess applications, approve finance and manage repayments.

Approval should be confirmed before installation begins or a non-refundable commitment is made.

Is Solar and Battery Storage Worth Considering?

A properly designed solar and battery system can help a household use more of the electricity generated on its roof.

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours. A battery can store unused solar energy for use in the evening, overnight or during higher-price periods. The financial benefit will depend on several factors, including:

  • Household electricity consumption

  • When electricity is used

  • Available roof space and orientation

  • Existing solar system capacity

  • Battery size and usable capacity

  • Electricity tariffs and feed-in rates

  • Equipment and installation costs

  • Available government incentives

A larger system is not always better. The system should be sized around the property’s actual energy usage, solar generation and future plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive $15,000 as a cash payment?

No. The $15,000 is the maximum amount available through a zero-interest loan. It is not paid as a cash grant and must be repaid.

Is the loan really interest-free?

The NSW Government describes it as a zero-interest loan, repayable over up to 10 years. Applicants should still read the finance provider’s terms and check whether any other conditions or charges apply.

Can renters apply?

Renters cannot generally apply for the $15,000 loan because loan applicants must own the property. Eligible renters may apply for the separate discount when applications open, subject to landlord approval.

Can the loan pay for solar panels and a battery together?

Yes. Rooftop solar and residential batteries are both listed as eligible upgrades. The products, supplier, installation and applicant must satisfy the program requirements.

Are applications open now?

Applications for the zero-interest loan are open as of 16 July 2026, with no current closing date. Applications for the separate discount of up to $4,000 are coming soon.
