If there is an unpleasant smell in the residential solar system, you can try the following treatment methods:

Regarding the water quality issue of the water tank

Change water multiple times: If the solar water heater has not been used for a long time, you can drain the water in the water tank, then refill it with half the water and drain it again. Repeat this several times to dilute and remove substances that may cause unpleasant odors.

Check the nozzle: See if the nozzle of the water heater is clogged. If it is clogged inside, dirt will give off a foul smell. If the material of the nozzle is not good, you may consider replacing it with a new one.

If the unpleasant smell is related to the water quality itself, you may consider purchasing a water purifier to improve the water quality.

Regarding pipeline issues

Cleaning the pipes: Dirt and sediment tend to accumulate inside the pipes, causing unpleasant odors. In such cases, the pipes can be cleaned.

Check the pipe connections: Investigate whether there are any issues at the pipe connections, such as the large pipe at the top coming apart from the small pipe, which may cause the emission of foul odors. If any problems are found, repair them promptly.

Regarding internal system issues

Cleaning and descaling: Solar water heaters generally need to be cleaned, inspected and disinfected every one and a half to two years. You can either have it cleaned by a professional or do it yourself. For instance, remove the solar vacuum tube, soak it in an appropriate amount of white vinegar for 10 minutes, then use a brush to remove the remaining scale and rinse it with clean water. Or, open the water inlet of the solar water heater, pour white vinegar into the water storage tank, and let the water heater circulate automatically for 20 to 30 minutes. Then, open the drain port to drain the white vinegar that has been cleaned of scale. Finally, fill the water tank with water and circulate again for 2 minutes before draining it. You can also use a special solar scale remover. Mix it with water in a ratio of 1:10 to make a cleaning solution and add it to the water storage tank. If the water heater has not been cleaned for a long time, you can directly pour in the original solution, let it soak for 5 to 15 minutes, and then let it automatically heat circulate for 20 to 30 minutes. Next, drain the cleaning solution directly from the drain port. Finally, open the water inlet. Fill with water, then circulate for two minutes and drain.

Handling the heat transfer medium: If solar energy shows poor heat conduction, slow heat conduction and a pungent smell, it may be due to installation issues or improper liquid addition methods. It is necessary to ensure the correct installation of air energy equipment, proper liquid addition, and the selection of high-quality heat transfer medium. If new liquid is added before the old liquid is thoroughly treated, a pungent smell may occur. At this point, the heat transfer medium needs to be reprocessed.
